Instructions for weighing Ins and Outs (I’s & O’s)

A. Place a dry QuickChange Wrap on the tare function scale (Note: if the plan is to weigh
the soiled wrap in a plastic bag, please weigh the dry wrap in the same bag, or type of
bag, for accurate I & O).

B. Calibrate the scale to “0” by pressing the tare function button.

C. After the patient has voided, place soiled wrap on the same scale and the tare function will calculate the measure. (Note: measurement may be documented in milliliters, grams, or ounces when charting.)

Suggestions/Notes:

  • If your facility does not have scales already being used (particularly as being used in Peds Units), consider using a metal countertop scale that can be sanitized between uses.
  • When selecting a countertop scale, be sure to select one that has the TARE function.
    • The TARE function zeroes the scale. When you press the TARE button with an object on the scale, the scale will display “0”.
    • The scale now considers the weight of the object to be zero, so any subsequent weight readings will only reflect the weight of what’s added to the object, not the object itself.
    • Taring allows you to weigh items within a container/bag and only get the weight of the item, not the container/bag.
